Hi everyone, Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years.

This is the first message to members so welcome to old & new alike.
First of all thank you for joining and supporting this petition, we already have over 4000 members in just over 3 weeks and steadily climbing constantly! We need the numbers so thank you for inviting all your friends to take part, and if you havent already please do, there is a quick and simple method of inviting all your friends in the groups INFO tab.

A lot keeps changing in regards to facebook privacy lately as many of you may have noticed. I thought it would be best to provide a thorough UPDATE on the changes. Its a long update so I had to send it in parts for you. Please take the time to read the following information & if anyone has feedback please dont hesitate to reply.

★ FRIENDS LIST

You are able to hide your friends list to strangers AND mutual friends now. This option became available just recently. Mutual friends are still visible, but there is no access to the entire friends list even when you click "see all". To set this option:

1. Go to the FRIENDS box under your profile picture.
2. Click on the PENCIL icon (located to the right of the word FRIENDS) to edit.
3. Make sure that you have UNCHECKED the box that says 'Show Friends to Everyone'.

** PLEASE NOTE: Your friends list is ALWAYS visible to people that are on your friends list. There is no way to turn this off. Mutual friends are ALWAYS visible. There is no way to turn this off either.

★ 'Add-As-Friend' BUTTON

Some people (including myself) noticed a change in this option that was removed practically within 24 hours. The options that were available for that brief time allowed you to customised this setting so that no-one could see this button. However, if you set this option to "only friends" within this time and then check for the setting again after it was removed, you lost the setting. Some people were fortunate enough to be able to keep this setting. DO NOT CHECK for this setting if you were able to set your ADD-AS-FRIEND button to 'only-friends' within this timeframe as it has been removed.

The current options are "everyone" and "friends-of-friends"

★ SET PRIVACY FOR GROUPS


1. Application settings

2. Next to Groups CLICK "Edit Settings"

From the drop down bar - select what visibilty you wish to set (if you want no-one to see your group info select "Only Me")

To remove them from your profile completely, so that you have to go into your groups from your menus only to access them, select visibility to "only Me" and next to where it says Info Section Click "remove" (it should then say Available (add) next to it).

To set groups info not to appear in your friends new feeds, You must go to the 'Additional permissions' tab in the edit groups section and UNCHECK the box next to 'Publish to streams'

★ SET PRIVACY FOR PHOTOS

Many people are not fully aware of the processes involved in setting privacy on their photos. You must first set options in privacy settings and also then application settings. This way your photo albums are assured privacy. There is no way to hide your current profile picture and it appears on your profile to everyone.

1. Set through Privacy Settings

Photo Albums > Edit settings
From here you can set the visibility of photo albums specifically. In custom settings you have the options to show an albums contents to selected friends, friend lists or set so that only you can see it.

Photos and Videos Of me
From here select the visibilty you wish to set for photos and videos that your friends 'tag' you in. In custom settings you have the options to set visibility for selected friends, friend lists or set so that only you can see them.

2. Set through Application settings

Go to Photos and click "edit settings". This will allow you to set visibility of the Tab & profile box on your profile, or if you wish to have one at all. CLICK 'Additional permissions' and UNCHECK the box next to "publish to streams" if you wish the default setting for your albums to not come up in your friends news feeds. Please note, a pop-up also asks you when you create an album, so if you wish to not publish the album you must still SKIP at this time.

** YOU CAN NOT HIDE YOUR CURRENT PROFILE PICTURE **

★ SET PRIVACY FOR PAGES

There is NO privacy settings on pages that you become a fan of. Pages that you are a fan of are visible to EVERYONE that views your profile and there is no setting to change this or modify this. For those of you who disapprove with this I suggest you also check out this page:

★ PUBLIC INDEXING - Google & other search engines.

At present you are able to turn off the capability for people to be able to google your user profile. To turn this off:

Settings>Privacy settings>search

And make sure the box marked 'allow' next to "Public Search Results" is UNCHECKED.

This method is supposed to remove search engines from being able to access the information on your facebook profile including even your name. However, many have found this to not be true, and alot of people have still found information when they 'google' themselves. I guess the best thing you can do is make sure this box is unchecked, and you re-check your privacy settings everytime you add an application to your profile.

★ WHAT YOUR FRIENDS CAN SHARE

New changes in Privacy mean that your friends can now share more information about you too through the applications and sites they visit through Facebook. To control what information your friends can share about you:

Privacy Settings>Applications and websites

UNCHECK all boxes for information you dont wish your friends to share about you.

★ APPLICATIONS

When the privacy changes took affect, settings on most applications that were added to your profile were reset to 'everyone'.
When applications are now accepted they are in most cases set default to everyone. Which means when you accept a new application, it is visible on your profile for all to see. You MUST re-check that you have the privacy settings you want on EVERY application you use EVERYTIME you accept one. To check your Application settings:

This also allows you to set visibility of your events, links & videos. Please check them, in most cases the default setting now is 'everyone'.

YOU CAN BLOCK AN APPLICATION FROM ACCESSING YOUR INFORMATION. YOU MUST DO IT BY INDIVIDUALLY BLOCKING THEM. To do so:

** NEWS ON APPLICATIONS PLEASE READ **


If you've used some applications by "RockYou," (they own a number of applications) you should change your password.
Their database was hacked and 30-million passwords, e-mail addresses, and user names were stolen.

"RockYou" stored these passwords in plain text (Plain Text= same as what you are reading). User data is supposed to be encrypted server-side.

★ NEWS FEEDS

There is no privacy setting for news feed and live feed. Currently, any action you take that is not covered under a set privacy setting is default to show up on news feed. Usually settings for news feeds is under 'Additional Permissions' sections when you edit applications. There is no way to turn off news feed information including what page you become a fan of, who you become friends with, liking a status etc unless you remove it from your own wall, and some people have not found this to be an airtight method.

* Writing on peoples walls - According to facebook, now when we write on a friends wall, the post shows up in our feed, their feed and our mutual friends feeds.

*PLEASE NOTE - Some people (including myself) have noticed that when you have a pending friend request, your information shows up on their news feeds too. Which means by having a pending friend request, you are allowing them to access some of your information. As far as I can tell at this point, your profile remains set under your privacy settings.

Another way to limit the amount of information that can be shared from your profile through advertisements on facebook. More info:

After going through your profile's privacy and application settings it is always best to 'preview' your profile.

** PLEASE NOTE ** When previewing your profile you will not see your application settings on there. 3rd Party applications are not displayed via this view method. To fully see what your profile looks like to a complete stranger you need a complete stranger to tell you ( I know right?)
